Birmingham was also one of the first towns to be reached by the railways, with the first line being built in 1837, connecting Birmingham with Wolverhampton. Birmingham’s canals also helped the town become an important transportation hub, with the first canal being built in 1769 and the last in 1864.

Birmingham’s growth as an industrial town also led to the growth of the Trade Union movement. Birmingham was the birthplace of the Trade Union Congress, as well as the Home of the first Trades Hall. Birmingham was also the birthplace of the Labour Party, with the first Labour MP being elected in 1892.
